When starting fashion/beauty photography you will find it hard to create images that stand out, nevermind turning the head of publishers. This short post will go over the process of broadcasting your work to a wider audience by getting your photography published in various fashion magazines. This is aimed more at veteran portrait photographers rather than beginners. The reason for this is generally photographers with more experience with shooting and editing will be able to produce images closer to what is desired by publishers over amateur work.
Kavyar
This is a website where you can send submissions to various magazines all around the world. I would say this is the most straightforward and direct method of getting your work exposure. With the free version, you get 10 submissions in a month which can be sent to various publishers for prints, web editorials, and social media work. Each magazine editor will write a detailed description of what type of work they want from you. It will include a theme, dimensions for the images, and guidelines. This is an example of what magazines look for:
4-20 images.
JPG format.
Portrait: 8.5 x 11 in, 300dpi (2550 x 3300 px).
Landscape: 17 x 11 in, 300dpi (5100 x 3300 px).
Must be exclusive and unpublished.
All editorials must have 2-4 different looks, editorials with one look won’t be accepted.
These conditions are quite common for most magazines on kavyar. Most of them will give you free submissions but the bigger publishers will ask you to pay at least $5-$10 for a standard submission. My advice would be to start out with the free ones and work yourself up to the bigger and more expensive ones when you feel your work is at that sort of standard. When you land on the submission section of the website you will see countless options for you to submit to, my advice would be to find a magazine that fits more to your style. This can be done by clicking the magazine and scrolling to the bottom of the page to check out their Instagram work. If their work fits your personal style then go right for it.

Making sure when you’re submitting work, that you speak to all of your creative team first to make sure they are all good with doing so. Obviously, as the photographer, you don’t need to do this if you have contracts signed letting you use the images commercially, but it’s just polite to just get in contact with the model, the MUA, and stylist so you’re all on the same page. Once you’re accepted for your submission you may have to sign a release form for the images. This is to say they can promote the image wherever they want but you still hold the rights to the image. After publication, you generally receive tear sheets between 10-15 days later but it really does vary from each publisher. You should definitely use the tear sheets to promote yourself where you can. Post them on your socials and on your stories, making sure to tag the magazines. This will allow your notification to pop up on their account so they can then share it with their story, and this all helps with getting the most exposure as possible. Then finally with all of the magazines I’ve worked with personally they all charge for their printed versions on magcloud.com. They usually charge around $25 and take 2-3 weeks to be delivered. This is more to have in your office or studio as keepsakes than anything else.
Conclusion
Make sure you have high-quality work before you even consider submitting anywhere. You don’t want to try too early and be disheartened when you don’t get accepted. Make sure you read all of the guidelines of the site so you’re submitting the right content. Most importantly just submit to magazines that are going to be beneficial to you, otherwise, you may just be wasting your time.
